The development of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) has enabled us to observe atherosclerotic lesions in vivo. The purpose of this study was to assess the usefullness of IVUS in evaluating early stage atheromatous lesions in vivo in an atherosclerotic rabbit aorta by comparison with microscopic findings. To induce atheromatous changes endotherium was removed by withdrawing a no. 4 French Fogarty catheter from the thoracic to abdominal aorta in male, white rabbits after 4 weeks of high-cholesterol feeding.
