It has been reported that non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAf) makes a significantly independent contribution to stroke incidence. The purpose of this study was to estimate the significance of left atrial appendage (LAA) flow velocity in patients with NVAf in the detection of stroke incidence, and to determine the correlation between LAA flow velocity and Af duration. Thirteen patients with cerebral infarction (CI) and 25 patients without CI were studied. CI was verified via a brain CT or MRI scan. The left atrial diameter (LAD), which was assessed via a transthoracic echocardiography, was not significantly different in patients with CI (45±6 mm) and patients without CI (42±5 mm). However, LAA flow velocity, which was assessed via a transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) , was significantly lower in patients with CI (8.0±1.9 cm/sec) than in patients without CI (12.0±4.0 cm/sec) (P
