A recently developed acoustic quantification (AQ) method permits real time automated boundary detection with on-line cavity area and volume measurements throughout the cardiac cycle. To assess the effects of a region of interest (ROI) on the evaluation of left ventricular area (LVA), fractional area change (FAC), left ventricular volume (LVV) and ejection fraction (EF), we examined 30 patients using the AQ method. A trackball-derived ROI-1 was drawn around the mitral annulus at end-diastole. A trackball-derived ROI-2 was drawn around the mitral annulus at end-systole. On-line AQ LVA and LVV calculated from ROI-1 were larger than those calculated from ROI-2 (left ventricular end-diastolic area: 27±6 cm2 (ROI-1, apical 4-chamber view (A 4-CV)) vs 24±6 cm2 (ROI-2, A 4-CV), p2 (ROI-1, A 4-CV) vs 15±6 cm2 (ROI-2, A 4-CV), p
