We measured the velocity of the propagation of low-frequency vibration in the uterus in vitro and in vivo, to evaluate a usefulness of the sonoelasticity imaging system developed by us for ultrasonic tissue characterization. In the in vitro study, the average velocity in the leiomyoma tissue was 1195±800 (mean±SD) cm/s. and in the adenomyosis 727±272 cm/s., which as significantly lower than in the leiomyomas (pin vivo study, the mean velocities in 27 cases of leiomyoma, five cases of adenomyosis, and five normal uteri were 1202±439, 908±322, and 526±159 cm/s., respectively. We therefore conclude that this system is useful for determining tissue characteristics in a clinical setting.
