A new bone mineral quantifying device (UXA-300, Aloka) that can simultaneously measure bone strength and bone mineral density (BMD) in the calcaneus by low-frequency ultrasound and single energy X-ray absorptiometry (SXA) has been developed. We used this unit to measure right calcaneal BMD per unit area (C-BMD), BMD per unit volume (V-BMD), speed of sound (SOS), attenuation of sound (AOS) and elastic index (E-I) in 100 women ranging from 20 to 81 years of age (mean: 44.0 years). The UXA-300 can provide E-1 and three-dimensional V-BMD, measurements that were not obtainable with previous bone mineral quantifying methods. The relationships of these parameters to mean BMDs in the second to fourth lumbar vertebrae measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (QDR-2000, Hologic) were also studied. There were significant positive correlations (r=0.577∼0.750, p
