A 64-year-old man was admitted to this institution because of a bleeding gastric ulcer. Abdominal x-ray film showed a radiopaque tumor measuring 14 cm in diameter at the right lateral abdomen; ultrasonography showed a cystic tumor with low internal echo and partially thickened wall at the lower pole of right kidney; computed tomography showed a clearly bordered isodensity tumor; magnetic resonance imaging showed a hyperintense tumor in the T₁-weighted image and a slightly hyperintense tumor in the T₂-weighted image; and angiography showed an avascular tumor with a partially stained wall. Ultrasonically guided tumor biopsy showed the tumor to contain bloody fluid, and histopathologic examination of biopsied material from the thickened wall led to a diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma.
