To evaluate transabdominal ultrasongraphic features of transient ischemic colitis, we examined 27 patients: 19 woman and 8 men. Average age was 55 years; range, 21 to 88 years. Transabdominal ultrasonography and colonoscopy were used to examine all of these patients within 3 days after the onset of symptoms. Transabdominal ultrasonography showed segmentally distributed wall thickening on the left side of the colons of 26 of the 27 patients. Wall thickness ranged from 4.9 mm to 11.0 mm. The fourth layer of the bowel wall was clearly demonstrated in all patients; the first, second, and third layers were blurred in 19 patients; in 20, the central hyperechoic layer was not visible. Laboratory data showed no correlation between degree of wall thickening and white blood cell count or C-reactive protein at the time of the first consultation. The lesion appeared slightly longer when viewed ultrasonographically than when viewed endoscopically. Degree of wall thickening determined ultrasonography was in general agreement with the endoscopic findings. We conclude that transabdominal ultrasonography is useful in the diagnosis and evaluation of transient ischemic colitis.
