Renal blood flow is known to reflect changes in renal function caused by kidney diseases. The Doppler flow imaging method provides information on renal blood flow. We investigated renal blood flow in cases of hydronephrosis using the noninvasive Doppler method. Ellenbogen proposed a classification of hydronephrosis based on comparison of ultrasonic and pyelographic findings in 1977. Here we propose a new concept, the dilation index: the ratio of the maximum width of the dilated renal pelvis to that of the kidney. Dilation index can classify hydronephrosis more precisely than other methods. Correlation between dilation index and resistive index was recognized both in the segmental and interlobar arteries (r=0.57, r=0.53, p
