We used B-mode and color Doppler ultrasonography to examine 17 patients with malignant lymphoma between July 1993 and May 1996 in order to evaluate the characteristic findings of malignant lymphoma retrospectively. The subjects included 8 men and 9 women with a mean age of 54 years (range, 22 to 78 years). The histologic diagnosis of malignant lymphoma was made on surgery or biopsy in all of the patients, all of whom had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Eleven of the 17 patients were examined at the time of their first hospital visit; the remaining 6 were examined at the time of recurrence. B-mode color Doppler ultrasonographic examinations were performed using a convex 3.5 MHz probe, 3.75 MHz probe, or both. Color signals were observed in 26.5% (30/113) of the lesions, regardless of the location of the lesion. Color signals were present in all 6 lesions in the mesenteric lymph nodes and in 5 lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, and color signals were obtained from all 14 lesions larger than 40 mm in diameter. B-mode echogenecity and the color signal were significantly associated. While no color signals were present in lesions with homogeneously low echogenecity (84.5%), color signals were present in 93.8% of lesions with heterogeneous low and high echogenecity. The patterns of the color signals were classified as centrally located spotty or linear and/or tree-like. The color signal tended to show a centrally located spotty pattern in lesions with homogenous echogenecity (73.3%) and a linear and/or tree-like pattern in those with high and low echogenecity (53.3%).
