Bone mineral density (BMD) has been shown to decrease in Graves' disease as a result of the high rate of bone turnover with predominance of resorption. We studied bone mass indices of the os calcis by ultrasound bone densitometry in female patients with Graves' disease, investigated BMD in the lumbar spine and hip bone (L2-L4 BMD and hip BMD) using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and determined levels of biochemical markers for bone metabolism. Fourteen untreated patients with Graves' disease (group G: mean age, 44.8±9.4 years) and 14 age-matched treated patients with Graves' disease (group TG: mean age, 45.9±10.6 years) were studied. Blood levels of calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), alkaliphosphatase (Alp), and osteocalcine (BGP), as well as urinary levels of hydroxyproline (HP), pyridinoline (Pyr), and deoxypyridinoline (Dpyr) were measured as markers for bone metabolism. All SOS, BUA and stiffness indices in group G were significantly lower than those in the controls (1492.5±17.1 m/s, 108.0±7.2 dB/MHz, 69.9±8.9% vs. 1536.0±19.4 m/s, 111.3±6.3 dB/MHz, 84.3±8.2% (p
