US findings from a case of so-called tumoral calcinosis of the gluteal region were correlated with appearance in CT and macroscopic images. Ultrasonography (US) showed this mass to be composed of three kinds of lesions: (1) cystic areas with a thin wall, (2) a cystic area with a thick wall in which a fluid-fluid level could be seen, and (3) a stone-like area. US was able to detect the fluid-fluid level within the cystic mass, this fluid being a characteristic CT finding in tumoral calcinosis. US could not, however, readily demonstrate fluid collection in the stone-like area. The combination of CT and US would thus appear useful for defining the detailed characteristics of tumoral calcinosis.
