Sixteen histologically confirmed cases of intestinal malignant lymphoma were analyzed to determine the relationship between their sonographic images and clinicopathologic characteristics. Nine of these cases that ultrasound was able to demonstrate were classified by type as follows: intussusception, 1 case; intraluminal mass, 1 case; ulcerated, 1 case; and diffuse wall thickening, 6 cases. Echography alone identified 6 of these 9 cases as malignant lymphoma of the diffuse wall-thickening type. The gross morphology of 2 lesions that were resected was ulcerative type in 1 case and diffusely infiltrative type in the other; the remaining 4 cases were not resected. Lesions of both the intussusception and intraluminal-mass types appeared polypoid in ulatasonographic images obtained from surgical specimens. Histologic examination cofirmed the presence of ulceration in a case that appeared ulcerated on sonography. We thus conclude that ultrasonographic findings should prove useful in diagnosing intestinal malignant lymphoma, especially when diffuse wall-thickening is present.
