We studied ultrasonographic localization and evaluation of the sizes of 11 pulmonary tumors during thoracoscopy: 4 were benign; 7 were lung cancers. Ultrasonography showed peripheral pulmonary tumors in 7 (64%) of the 11 tumors. 1 (25%) of the 4 benign tumors, and 6 (86%) of the 7 lung caners. Mean maximum diameter of the 11 pulmonary tumors determined by the ultrasonography was 16±4 (mean±SD) mm, and the resected specimens measured 21±9 mm. There was no significant statistical difference between maximum diameter determined by ultrasonogtaphy and that of the resected specimens. Ultrasonographic guidance during thoracoscopy helped us locate and determine the size of pulmonary tumors. We conclude that this method is useful in making incisions for partial lung resections.
