Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) was performed in 23 patients with ischemic colitis and in 10 normal controls. The features were compared in these two groups, and the results from the two groups were compared. At onset the, thickening of the third layer with changes of echogenicity was observed in all of the patients, and thickening of the fourth layer was also observed in 20 of 23 patients. Thickning in 3 patients in whom marked thickening of the bowel wall had been observed at onset was later classified of stricturing form, and in 2 of them thickening of the bowel wall was still apparent 2 weeks after onset. We consider EUS to be a useful method for predicting the prognosis of ischemic colitis in its earlv phase.
