We sent a questionnaire to chief urologists in 84 university hospitals and 132 center hospitals in order to find out how transrectal sonography (TRS) is distributed in Japan. TRS equipment is being used at 180 (98%) of the 184 responding facilities. The main uses of TRS are the diagnosis of prostatic cancer (169/180, 94%) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (144/180, 80%), and the monitoring of biopsy techniques (152/180, 84%). TRS is distributed widely throughout the country and is indispensable in urologic clinics.
