To evaluate the usefulness of diagnostic criteria for breast lesions, interobserver agreement in interpreting sonographic images was analyzed using kappa (κ) statistics. After being taught basic diagnostic criteria, 22 medical students interpreted sonographic images of the breasts of 41 patients. Six sonographic features (shape, border, boundary echoes, internal echoes, posterior echoes, and bilateral shadows) and the final impression in differentiating benign from malignant lesions were scored using a five-point rating scale, and κ values of each criterion were obtained.
