Sarcoma 180 cells were suspended in air-saturated PBS and exposed to standing-wave ultrasound for up to 60 seconds in the presence and absence of eosin Y (EY). Rate of ultrasound-induced cell damage was enhanced two to three times with 160 μM EY, while no cell damage was observed with EY alone. Histidine significantly inhibited this enhancement, possibly suggesting a sonochemical mechanism.
