A 68-year-old woman was admitted to this institution because of left abdominal pain. Transabdominal ultrasonography (US) showed diffuse thickening (10 mm) and blurred stratification of the descending colon, and thickening of the bowel wall was still apparent 13 weeks after onset. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) showed thickening, mainly of the fourth layer. US was used to examine 12 patients with transient-type IC. Thickness of the bowel wall ranged from 6 to 12 mm (mean, 8.4 mm). Wall stratification disappeared, however, in 1 of these patients. Six of 7 cases observed 1 week after onset showed decrease in colonic-wall thickness, to less than 4 mm. We conclude that the US findings of stricture-type IC were wall thickening with blurred stratification and wall thickening that remained for a prolonged period of time.
