The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical application of ultrasonographic diagnosis in gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. We evaluated the prevalence of organic disorders among the 1674 patients with abdominal symptoms and the accuracy of sonographic diagnosis of diseases of the GI tract. In 422 patients (25.2%), organic GI diseases were diagnosed as the cause of symptomology. Correct diagnosis of organic GI disorders was obtained in 341 patients (80.8%). Extracorporeal ultrasonography (US) showed a high detection rate in the diagnosis of acute inflammatory disorders, while the detection of peptic ulcers by routine screening was poor. We found US useful in diagnosing GI diseases encountered in patients with various abdominal symptoms.
