Fetal breathing movements (FBM) were recorded with the use of real-time B-mode scan and M-mode devices, and fetal heart tone by fetal phonocardiographic microphone and amplifier. Fetal breathing was detected as early as 16 weeks of gestation. Fetal breathing were noted in 101 cases of 198 normal fetuses. The breathing rate was usually 50 to 80 per min during pregnancy. Fetal arrhythmia was associated with fetal breathing. A decrease in fetal heart beat intervals was observed during fetal inspiration phase followed by an increase during expiration. Fetal heart beat-to-beat intervals decreased in fetal apneic state when compared to the state of active fetal breathing.
