Ultrasonotomography with electronic linear-array scanner is effectively used for detection of hepatic tumors and characterization of tumor tissues. So, by using this method, we studied therapeutic effects of transcatheter arterial embolization on hepatocellular carcinoma.
14 patients with an unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma underwent the embolization therapy and had ultrasound examination at regular intervals thereafter. Ultrasonographic findings obtained before and after the embolization were investigated comparatively each other. They were also compared with findings of serum α-fetoprotein, angiography, computed roentgen tomography and other clinical examinations performed at the same time.
After the embolization, 11 of the 14 patients had distinct reduction of tumors on arteriograms as well as ultrasonograms and improvement of other clinical findings and a general condition. Echo-patterns of tumor in 8 of the 11 patients changed from high to low or anechoic soon after the embolization. The ultrasonographic changes were thought to be caused from necrotizing of tumor tissues. The remaining 3 showed on changes of echo-patterns.
