Regional abnormalities of wall motion of left ventricle were analysed for their features in 17 patients of Duchenne type progressive muscular dystrophy (DMD) with abnormal wall motion of left ventricle by echocardiography.
Real time, 2-dimensional echocardiographic study showed that all the cases showed depressed motion and 6 of them demonstrated ventricular aneurysms in the posterior wall of left ventricle (LVPW). However, there was no case showing ventricular aneurysm or paradoxical motion in other segments of left ventricle. And there were several cases with normal motion in each segment except in LVPW. From these results, the wall motion of LVPW was thought to be disturbed more frequently and more severely than that of other segments.
Paradoxical, akinetic and hypokinetic motions of interventricular septum (IVS) and LVPW defined by real time, 2-dimensional echocardiogram were similarly evaluated by their excursions measured by M-mode echocardiogram.
