Ultrasonic scanning was performed on 17 patients with an unruptured ectopic pregnancy. Ultrasonic findings were comparably analyzed with clinical signs and symptoms, pelvic examination, pregnancy test, culdocentesis hysterosalpingography (HSG), and operative findings.
Almost all sonograms showed a thick-walled, cystic adnexal mass which represents an extrauterine gestational sac. Fetal echo within the gestational sac was seen in 6 cases (35.3%), and fetal heart movement in only one case. Hemorrhagic echo in the cul-de-sac was seen in 4 cases (23.5%). This adnexal mass should be differentiated from adjacent organs such as fluid-filled bowel and corpus lutein cyst.
HSG was also performed in 12 cases, and any remarkable changes suggesting ectopic pregnancy were not obtained in two cases.
These results indicate that ultrasonic examination is a great useful method to make a diagnosis of unruptured ectopic pregnancy.
