To assess the pathophysiological significance of the change in the isovolumic relaxation flow (IRF) in the left ventricle before and after ventricular premature contraction (VPC), pulsed Doppler echocardiography was used to evaluate 14 cases with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; 8, hypertensive heart disease; 6) and 30 idiopathic VPC. Left ventricular pressure tracings were obtained from 6 of the 14 cases with LVH and another 4 cases with LVH, although in these latter cases the Doppler echocardiogram could not be recorded sufficiently.
